Kristin SZCZERBIK , Owen County Council

Kristin Szczerbik (pronounced Sir-bick),is currently serving her first term as a member of the Owen County Council. Szczerbik represents District 3 which includes the northern townships of Jennings, Lafayette, Morgan, and also Jackson township - where she operates her own business and resides with her husband and their three children.
Szczerbik believes in “being accountable in order to make our county able.” She asserts that the financial decisions of the council members are “held accountable not only to the county‘s budget, but are also responsible for the vitality of our fellow Owen County residents.” She continues that, “Responsible budgeting requires foresight. In addition to addressing what the county needs now it is also important to ensure the financial longevity of our county so that the people, families, commerce, and future generations will continue to have the services and opportunities that are essential for our community to thrive.”
Szczerbik has successfully served the public at the federal, state, and local levels of government. She has worked for the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Indiana Attorney General‘s Office where she started Indiana‘s first appellate Victim Advocacy Program. She also clerked for the Death Penalty Division of the State Public Defender‘s Office and the Vigo County Prosecutor’s Office in the Domestic Violence Court. Szczerbik commented that her "commitment to serving the community now continues in a new capacity -as a member of the Owen County Council.”
Szczerbik graduated from Indiana University in Bloomington with a double B.A. and from the Indiana University School of Law in Indianapolis. She is an active community volunteer in both her professional and personal life. She has served as an elementary Sunday school teacher at St. Agnes for the past fourteen years. Szczerbik is also the Democratic Precinct Chairperson for Jackson Township and the former 2004 Democrat nominee for State Senate, Disctrict 37.
Szczerbik notes that she brings “experience and a bold approach to getting done what is necessary for our county‘s success.” She also emphasized that “financial decisions made with accountability in mind will enable Owen County to prosper for generations to come.” Szczerbik concluded that she "appreciates the county's vote of confidence and looks forward to serving our community!”
